On Sunday, December 7th between 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. , Hearthside will open its doors for a Candlelight Christmas Tour. Guests will be greeted by guides dressed in Victorian finery and invited to take a leisurely stroll through the house to admire the elegantly decorated rooms that will surely evoke memories of Christmas' past. Nostalgic holiday melodies, performed by a harpist, will ring in the season and brighten the mood of the oncoming winter season. “Candles were an important part of Victorian Christmas traditions,” states Kathy Hartley, President of Friends of Hearthside. “It was common to place lighted candles in a home's windows during the 12 days of Christmas to signify that food and shelter were available to weary travelers.” “In keeping with that tradition,” she adds, “we are asking those who come to visit this beautiful home to share their good fortune by donating non-perishable food items or canned goods that will go to the RI Community Food Bank.” Hearthside joins with other historic house museums throughout the state that are celebrating with Christmas events during Dec. 6-7 and collecting food items for the RI Community Food Bank. The Food Bank helps feed 40,000 Rhode Islanders, a 12% increase over last year, through a network of 300 agencies. The Food Bank's goal is to boost its food collection by five truckloads this year. It gives our volunteers great pleasure to decorate this beautiful home and share with the community during the Christmas season. We don't charge admission for this event because we don't want to exclude anyone, but we do hope that the awe that people experience when they walk in the door will inspire them to want to save this beautiful home as much as we do, and therefore we encourage a $3 donation per person. Visitors may even pick up a gift or two during their visit to Hearthside. The Hearthside Gift Shop has a number of unique items that are sure to please someone on the gift list. Also, a raffle will be held with a variety of different themed gift baskets that will go to the lucky winners at the conclusion of the day. All proceeds from the event provide funds to continue the restoration of Hearthside. Read what some of our previous visitors have said:
