Classes in Hand Forging UnderwayDespite the fact that most blacksmiths are men, it isn’t about to stop a group of women who want to learn how to pound a hammer. The group (also known as “The Women of Steel”) is kicking off the 2005 Season as class members at the Hannaway Forge and Blacksmith Shop. Every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. till noon, the Shop is buzzing with activity, as well-experienced blacksmiths demonstrate their traditional craft of hand forging, and students learn how to make various household items from pieces of iron and steel. The goal is to not only perpetuate the art of blacksmithing, but to have ongoing activity at the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop. The Shop re-opened in the spring of 2004, and classes filled up quickly and continued through the fall until it closed for the winter months. Classes are limited to 3-4 students, with schedules being coordinated according to availability.
