Monthly Open Houses Held on 2nd Saturday

The 2005 Season at Hearthside kicks off with the first Open House on Saturday, March 12 th. On the second Saturday of each month thereafter, the doors to Hearthside open up between 1:00-4:00 p.m. to invite visitors to tour the house at no charge. The monthly Open House is in collaboration with other Great Road historic sites also opening on a once-a-month basis. The Great Road effort is known as “Travel Three Hundred Years in Three Miles.” In addition to the 1810 Hearthside house, the initiative includes these other neighboring Great Road sites: the 1687 Eleazer Arnold House, the 1694 Valentine Whitman House, the 1704 Friends Meeting House, the 1870 William Hannaway Blacksmith Shop, as well as the Wilbur Kelly House in Quinnville. The Kelly House is open 7 days a week from May through October, and the Hannaway Shop is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. – noon for demonstrations and classes. While there is no charge for the tours, donations are strongly encouraged.

The objective in opening the sites is to promote the historical significance of this area by generating greater visibility of the Great Road Historic District. It endeavors to provide visitors with an understanding of the links between the different sites and their value in the development of the area. By visiting the Great Road Historic District, one can explore the evolution of Lincoln from a few frontier homesteads to an industrial and agricultural community to the present day. Great Road was built in 1683 as the major thoroughfare on the west side of the Blackstone River, and was the major transportation route between Providence and Mendon, Massachusetts. To encourage your visit to all the Great Road properties, a fully stamped Great Road Passport, showing that you have visited all the historic sites mentioned, may be turned in at The Lodge Pub and Restaurant on Breakneck Hill Road (just up the road from Hearthside) for a free dessert with purchase of a meal. Great Road Passports are available at each of the historic locations. Be sure to ask for one when you visit!
