Leaders of Hearthside Earn Newspaper's Inagural Award for Historic Preservation

President of Friends of Hearthside, Kathy Hartley, and Vice President, John Scanlon, have received the first “Good Neighbor Awards” by The Valley Breeze. The awards program was recently developed by The Breeze to recognize citizens of the community whose efforts benefit the Blackstone Valley and its people, but may be largely overlooked. The three award categories were for historic preservation, volunteerism, and student journalism.

In making the award, Breeze publisher Tom Ward, noted that Kathy and John were both being honored for not only their leadership role in founding Friends of Hearthside in 2001, but for the “remarkable progress made in preserving Hearthside and the surrounding historic properties in such a short period of time.” In accepting the award, Kathy commented that her motivation came from her grandparents, who had sold the Chase Farm to the Town of Lincoln some 20 years ago in order to preserve the natural beauty of the area, and the efforts to preserve Hearthside, which abuts the Chase Farm, was a natural extension of their wishes. John thanked the many volunteers and partners of the other Great Road historic sites for working collaboratively in meeting the mission of the Friends of Hearthside.

A weekly publication serving the communities in northern Rhode Island with local news, The Valley Breeze is now celebrating its 10th year. The award ceremony was held at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland on June 9, 2005.
