Hearthside - The House That Love Built

HEARTHSIDE PARADE FLOAT WINS FIRST PLACE

It was the star of Lincoln’s Memorial Day parade…..a miniature replica of Hearthside, a blacksmith pounding steel on an anvil, Civil War soldiers firing off antique guns, dozens of colorful plants, flowers and surrounded by American flags… all contained within a 40-foot long trailer. The Hearthside float, a compilation of Great Road’s historic sites, was accompanied by ladies and gents in Victorian dress, complete with top hats and parasols to shield the blazing sun. Adding to this historic Great Road scene was a bagpiper band that preceded the float and a truck with a spinning wheel display for the 1697 Valentine Whitman House (also a Great Road historic site) that followed it. The float drew lots of “oohs and aahs,” as well as a fair share of paparazzi as it crept along its 2-mile route down Smithfield Avenue.

All the hard work to put the float together paid off---not only did Hearthside and the Great Road Historic District get a lot of visibility, but the float received First Place in the judging for the William Horlbogen Memorial Trophy. Friends of Hearthside will be added to the trophy, along with all past recipients’ names inscribed on it, which is displayed at Lincoln Town Hall. Special thanks to Adler Brothers Construction for providing the truck, trailer and driver, and to Lincoln Gardens for providing all the plants and flowers.
