Hearthside - The House That Love Built

“The Hearthside Story” Now a Song; Debuts at Outdoor Concert

The legendary romantic tale of “Hearthside” has been captured in song, and its historic debut was held at a free concert on Saturday, July 8, 2006 on the grounds of Hearthside. Local singer and songwriter Wayne Carlow, of Scituate Country Music, wrote the song that is believed to be the only song written about the house since it was built 196 years ago. “The Hearthside Story” is based on the tale of a young man who falls in love with a woman and with the hope of marrying her, he builds her a house with “white pillars in front, backed by field stone.” But, she rejects his house in the country, preferring instead to stay in the city.

As Wayne explains it, “The song first tells the story of Hearthside, capturing in a direct way the essence of the love story handed down for years. “White pillars in front backed by field stone” is used to further identify Hearthside and relate some of the mansion’s charm and character. Various other lyrics are used too as themes and reminders to all of us today or to relate to the Hearthside story in a way that touches peoples’ hearts and perhaps touches their emotions relative to their own experience—lyrics and tempo intended to remain with all who hear the song.” He dedicated the song to Lincoln and to all who love Hearthside.

Under brilliant sunny skies, a crowd of 150 gathered for an afternoon of country music performed on the front porch of Hearthside. In between the toe tapping and hand clapping, people toured through the house and enjoyed popcorn, lemonade, watermelon and home baked cookies. Also joining Wayne Carlow were performers,

Val Leri and the Rodeo Cowboys, Swamp Yankee Hoedowners, Ray Manning and Ed Ledoux. All donated their performances to benefit the efforts of Friends of Hearthside in restoring the beautiful homestead.

A copy of the lyrics and music of “The Hearthside Story” will be at the house on permanent display, and CD’s of the song may be purchased through the Hearthside Gift Shop. For photos from the event, click here.
