Open House on August 12th to Host Civil War SutleryHearthside holds an Open House from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 12 th. A special feature of this month’s Open House will be a Civil War Sutlery exhibit set up on the lawn. A sutler was a traveling peddler during the 1800’s who sold provisions to military posts. Big Bear Trading Company, a local sutlery at many Civil War Re-enactment encampments, will be on hand to answer questions about life during the Civil War as well as to display an array of 19 th century goods, including tinware, woodenware, pewter, writing equipment, eating utensils, enamelware, jewelry, clothes, toys, sewing equipment, pottery and glassware, all of which are for sale. Also open that afternoon will be the Valentine Whitman House, a 1694 stone-ender house, located two miles from Hearthside at 1147 Great Road at the corner of Whalen Drive. The monthly Open Houses are free and a wonderful opportunity to get in-depth tours of some of Rhode Island finest examples of both Federal style architecture and earliest Colonial houses. |
